$104,700 over one year, to support start-up costs and fundraising for a sisal rug factory in Bahia that will create 150 jobs, directly benefiting 5,000 sisal producers; and help stabilize the sisal industry, thus benefiting another 100,000 producers and workers in the semi-arid region of Brazil. Cofunding for the initial phase of factory operations came from the Northeast Finance Fund (Brazilian government), DISOP (a Belgian donor agency), the municipal government, and investment from APAEB's credit union. $226,700 over two years, to consolidate a program to provide loans to 7,000 low-income owners of microenterprises and small businesses in Porto Alegre as part of a broader local development initiative that includes the municipal and state governments, the private sector, civil society, and international development agencies; contributions are expected in excess of $2.5 million. Instituto Socioambiental (ISA)
$143,864 over two years, to prepare a participatory social-environmental assessment of an Atlantic rainforest area of São Paulo's coast, with 350,000 low-income inhabitants. ISA will develop policy recommendations for the sustainable development of the region in consultation with government environmental agencies, seeking to reconcile conservation priorities with social and economic needs. $111,700, to provide training, technical assistance, and evaluation of agroecology programs, directly benefiting 21 member organizations and approximately 5,000 farm families. (BR-717)

Associação de Programas em Tecnologias Alternativas (APTA)
$41,500, to continue implementing a program to improve coffee, bananas, corn, and other seeds production and marketing, benefiting over 1,500 small farmers in Espírito Santo. (BR- 734)

Associação Vianei de Cooperação e Intercâmbio no Trabalho, Educação, Cultura e Saúde (VIANEI)
$51,542, to concentrate its activities in São José de Cerrito, benefiting 2,200 small-farm families. VIANEI will continue providing training and technical assistance in animal husbandry, alternative agricultural production, credit soil conservation, and farm management in close cooperation with the municipality and other local organizations. New activities include programs in alternative health and environmental sanitation, and support for developing a municipal plan based on participative strategic planning. The São José de Cerrito experience will be used to develop a new methodology for working with other municipal governments in Santa Catarina. (BR-726)

Centro de Educação e Cultura Popular (CECUP)
$71,000, to provide training to community school teachers and coordinators and to conduct a study on drop-out rates. The project will train 76 educators and study 16 community schools in the city and periphery of Salvador, Bahia, to provide training and technical assistance to 110 educators in 32 community schools serving 3,500 children in the city of Salvador. CECUP will also participate on local and state level educational policy councils and collaborate with regional and national educational NGOs. (BR-713)

$51,500, to continue a technical assistance and training program in sustainable agriculture benefiting small-scale farmers in seven municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. (BR-655)

Cooperativa Agro-extrativista de Xapuri (XAPURI)
$49,900, to continue a program to improve Brazil nut marketing and production, benefiting over 150 rubbertapper families in Acre. (BR-736)

Equipe Técnica de Assessoria, Pesquisa e Ação Social (ETAPAS)
$81,500, for a community-based action research program benefiting 800,000 low-income residents and dozens of nongovernmental development organizations in the Recife metropolitan region through courses and seminars, publications, video production, and research studies. (BR-673)

Grupo de Apoio à Prevenção à AIDS, Bahia (GAPA-BA)
$50,000, to continue a program of AIDS education, prevention, and networking in north-northeastern Brazil, including a pilot project reaching 2,000 prostitutes, and the formation of a regional network of 15 organizations working on AIDS. (BR-749)
