Maroon 5 and Guster Support Community Forestry in Guatemala

members of maroon 5 and guster visit guatemalan forestFollowing up on their December visit to Guatemala, members of the bands Maroon 5 and Guster sent a letter urging President Jimmy Morales to continue his country’s support for community forestry, particularly around the Maya Biosphere Reserve located in the Peten region. Jesse Carmichael, James Valentine and Adam Gardner touted the benefits of communities managing woodlands that they learned from a visit to IAF grantee Asociación de Comunidades Forestales de Petén (ACOFOP), a grassroots umbrella organization that represents more than 2,000 Guatemalans who earn a living from sustainable extraction of wood and other forest resources. In their plea, the concerned artists stressed, that  “[T]he wood products closest to our activities as musicians are musical instruments.”

Along with ACOFOP, the IAF supports many other organizations that recognized communities close to forests as the best stewards of these resources. To learn more, you may read A PATH THROUGH THE WOODS: COMMUNITY FOREST MANAGEMENT IN MEXICO.
