Lack of economic opportunity, social marginalization and threats to community-owned land undermine local development and contribute to high rates of migration from coastal communities in northern Honduras. Fundación Fe y Alegría Honduras (FYAH) supports community organizations and bilingual school development of five Garifuna communities in the municipality of Tela, strengthening cultural, civic and educational dimensions of the communities’ experience. At the IAF, we support community-led solutions to strengthen governance for grassroots development in Honduras. FYAH’s activities encourage civic participation to allow marginalized groups to defend their rights, propel their own development and advocate for government accountability.
This grant is part of the IAF’s efforts to address the root causes of irregular migration in Central America.
