2015-Nidia White

By |2021-04-11T14:11:17-04:0027 July 2015|

Project Description

Miskito women in the Región Atlántica Autónoma Norte experience barriers to participation and have few opportunities to generate income. At the IAF, we support community-led solutions to enhance peace and security in Nicaragua. Our grantee partner, Asociación Movimiento de Mujeres Nidia White (Nidia White), helps women achieve financial independence and raises awareness to prevent family violence. Nidia White’s activities strengthen marginalized communities’ capacity to improve their living conditions and participate equally in their nation’s political, economic, and social life.

Project Amendments

This amendment provides Asociación Movimiento de Mujeres Nidia White (Nidia White) with an additional $51,760 to address issues related to the Eta and Iota hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic, including repairing physical damage to the grantee’s offices and community infrastructure and analyzing the emotional effects of the hurricanes on community leaders and staff. Nidia White will use a portion of the additional funds to purchase locally-sourced hygiene and biosafety supplies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. As part of the amendment, Nidia White is mobilizing an additional $41,535 in counterpart resources to the grant agreement.

This amendment is part of the IAF’s broader Eta/Iota and COVID-19 response strategies, and the IAF’s Women INvesting in Growth and Security (WINGS) initiative to empower women as business and community leaders.

This amendment provides Nidia White with an additional six months and $15,000 to address issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including distributing locally-sourced PPE for Nidia White staff, purchasing computer equipment and cell phone plans to improve communications, and disseminating reliable COVID-19 information in local languages via radio. As a part of the amendment, Nidia White is mobilizing an additional $5,000 in counterpart resources to the grant agreement.

This amendment provides Nidia White with an additional two years and $143,590 to continue defending human rights, preventing domestic violence, and providing assistance to survivors in 22 communities and neighborhoods in the municipality of Puerto Cabezas. By training networks of community organizers, vulnerable youth, and independent indigenous judges, Nidia White is laying the groundwork for the sustainability of its work beyond the grant period. Nidia White is mobilizing an additional $203,846 in counterpart resources to the grant agreement.
